You’ll want to overlap the cards so the smears in the upper-left corner connect with the smears in the upper-left corner of a card laid on top of it.
Take note of the letters in the small pips, in the order of how the smears line. They’ll spell out a message.
The fully assembled message reads: “How long can Neil wear his jeans?”
The solution to the riddle is the answer!
The “Neil” being referenced by this set of cards is Neil Diamond. If you look up his name along with “jeans,” you’ll find that he has a song called, Forever in Blue Jeans. The answer to the riddle is FOREVER.
That's all the hints I have for this puzzle. The next click will reveal the answer as well as a quick breakdown of the intended method for arriving at the answer.
(Though if you just got the first part of the riddle, “How long?” and thought, “what’s a duration of time that’s associated with diamonds?” and then typed in FOREVER and got the answer that way… That’s fair play, you intuitive son of a gun!)
Have you tried seeing how the smears in the corner can line up from one card onto another?
The big smear that starts on the 9 is a good starting point.
Pro-tip: Once you line up all the smears of the cards while they’re face up, you won’t need to find a new order for the smears on the other side of the cards: You can take the card that’s at the beginning of the chain, move it to the end of the chain and flip it over. The smears will line up (provided the initial order is correct).
